Let's Get Started

To reduce the risk of injury user must read instruction manuals for all tools used in this project. Wear eye and respiratory protection. Use clamps to support work piece whenever practical.

Measure your desired length of your spice rack. Remember to take into account the number of jars you'd like to include under the rack. Mark your line of cut along your 1x3" poplar plank. Clamp your plank to your workbench and cut along your line of cut using the Dremel SawMax equipped with an SM500 Wood and Plastic Wheel. You'll notice how easy it is to cut along your marked line as you view it through the notch at the front of the tool. Tip: To unscrew your jars easily, we recommend leaving a fingers-width of space between your jars.

Next, you'll need to cut trim the same length as your poplar plank. This trim will serve as the support for your poplar shelf and will be drilled into your wall. Measure your trim to the same length as your poplar 1x3" and mark your cut. Using the same technique as you used in step one, cut your trim along your marked line.

To assemble your trim and shelf, lay your cut trim piece upside-down on your workbench. Lay your poplar plank on top of the trim, turned upside down as well. Line up the corners of the wood pieces so they are flush. Using a Dremel 4200 tool set to high speed, with a 150 drill bit, pre-drill 35 pilot holes through the two pieces where you will then hand screw them together. We recommend going this route instead of hand-drilling to prevent your wood pieces from splitting.

If you wish to stain the shelf, we recommend doing it at this stage of the process. We used a pecan-colored wood stain and applied it with a rag.

Once your shelf is dry (check your paint instructions this may take up to 12 hours), it is time to get started affixing the spice jars underneath the rack. Begin by using a jar lid to space the spice holders along the underside of your poplar plank. Remember to leave about a finger's width of space between jars.

Once you know where you'll be affixing the lid of each jar, drill a hole through the center of each lid. Then, lay the lid on top of your plank and drill a pilot hole through the cut center of your lid and into the poplar. Here again we used the Dremel 4200 at high-speed with the 150 to drill our holes. Then, affix the lids by hand by hand-screwing the lids into the pilot holes you just created. Continue using this method until all of your lids are securely in place.

At this point, do not screw your jars into the lids just yet. We recommend now drilling your rack into the wall, through the trim support you cut in step 2.

Once the rack is mounted, fill your jars with desired spices and screw them into their new shelf!

Before filling our spices, we etched labels into our jars using the Dremel 4200 tool. First we hand wrote our desired labels onto the jars with permanent marker. Then, we traced over the marked line using a Silicone Grinding Stone Dremel Accessory number 84922 in our 4200 tool. Changing accessories is easy with the 4200. To do this, pull down the levers on the 4200, remove the Drill bit, insert the Grinding Stone and pull your levers forward to secure. Set your tool to high speed and trace over your marked labels. Tip: If you see any permanent marker leftover that you wish to remove, use an acetone solution like nail polish remover to clean it off.
